Zariel Macchia, a sophomore at William Floyd High in New York, took third in the 5-kilometer girls championship race at the CHAMPS Sports Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park in New York. Macchia, who was second at last year's regionals and 12th nationally, clocked 17:47.9 to earn a return trip to Balboa Park's Morley Field in San Diego, Calif., to compete Dec. 10 at the CHAMPS Sports Cross Country Championships.
