Published by
Ellie Shea, an incoming senior at Belmont High in Massachusetts representing Emerging Elites, became the first American female athlete and only the second women's competitor in meet history to win gold medals in both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters in the same year at the Pan American U20 Championships at Jose A. Figueroa Freire Stadium in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico. Shea clocked a meet-record 9:05.78 in the 3,000, eclipsing the 1989 standard of 9:16.05 achieved by Canada's Lisa Harvey in Argentina, with incoming junior Zariel Macchia of William Floyd High in New York running 9:52.40 to earn a bronze medal for the Americans. Shea also triumphed in the 1,500 in 4:16.61, joining Brazil's Fabiana Cristine da Silva from 1997 in Cuba in sweeping both titles in the same year. More videos
